Understanding Sri Vasuki Naga
India Discovers Vasuki Indicus: The Largest Known Snake from the Eocene Period
Read on to learn about it and also to learn who Sri Vasuki Naga really is.
In a remarkable discovery, Prof Sunil Bajpai and Dr Debajit Datta of the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee found the fossil of a serpent in Gujarat that may have been the largest snake ever to exist on Earth.
Named Vasuki Indicus, after the king of snakes in Hindu mythology (Vasuki) and its location (Indicus for India), this madtsoiid snake from the warm Eocene period is estimated to be even larger than the previous record-holder, Titanaboa. This discovery reinforces India's status as a land with one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world.
Interestingly, the scientists involved chose to name the snake after Sri Vasuki Naga, a prominent figure in Hindu mythology. Sri Vasuki is known for being the serpent adorned by Lord Shiva around his neck and for his role as the rope in the churning of the great ocean (Sagar Manthan). This cosmic event led to the emergence of various divine treasures, including the lethal poison Halahal (consumed by Shiva), the nectar of immortality, Amrita, and the deities of wealth, Kubera and Lakshmi. Sri Vasuki also carries the famed Naag Mani on his head.
That also gives us an opportunity to understand who Sri Vasuki is really...
If we look at the etymology, Vas is dwelling, Vaasu is Wealth. The suffix "ki" represents a diminutive form and can also imply the manifestation or possession of a quality... So, the closest meaning of Vasuki is "the wealth that dwells inside."
As our mythology tells us, Shiva adorns Sri Vasuki on his neck. Shiva is the primordial consciousness that powers all of us. That sense of "I am" that we carry within, the one that enables the first-person subjective view we have, is Shiva. Sri Vasuki then becomes that element of Shiva (and Sri Vasuki is also a Shiva Gana), which represents the wealth that resides inside us.
This also ties nicely with the Ocean Churning. Essentially, Sri Vasuki is the most elemental sense of self that we carry inside us, which, when used in churning our inner self (i.e., deeply analyzing our own self), first leads to coming out of Halalhal (i.e., all not-so-good things stored inside us). But once that is cleaned, what comes out is Amrita, Kubera, and Lakshmi - all the wealth of the world, that is.
Sri Vasuki, then, is that elemental wealth which is adorned by our consciousness, that sliver of our ego, that when used for proper analysis of our own self, leads us to quell all bad in us, thereby liberating all the wealth of the world to us. That is the Great Vasuki Naga.
